Vibrations is a classic knit pullover that uses the interplay of contrasting colors to create an optical effect when paired with bold and bright colors against a neutral background. The slip stitch colorwork pattern is easy to remember since you’re only working the main color in combination with one contrasting color at a time. Using fingering weight yarn, the sweater is worked in four pieces, each from the bottom up.
Vibrations come in 9 sizes ranging from 32” to 61” (80 to 152.5 cm) with 2-5” of positive ease. The sample was knit using KnitPicks Palette yarn in the Majestic, Celestial, and Macaw colorways on a neutral Oyster Heather background.
Vibrations was one of five patterns selected to be featured in the Coloring Outside the Lines eBook in which 50% of the sales are donated to Outside In, a nonprofit organization providing healthcare and social services to marginalized communities in Portland, Oregon.
Picking Contrasting Colors
Half of the fun in a colorwork project is picking the right combination of colors and making sure they will pop. The challenge is selecting colors that go well together but have enough contrast so they don’t blend together. The easiest way to check the contrast levels of your yarn is with black-and-white photos. You can lay your yarn out next to each other (or if you are shopping online, arrange some screenshots of the yarn you want into a single image using a tool like Canva), then edit the photo to black and white or turn the saturation all the way down. If your yarns have a good enough contrast value, you can still tell the yarns apart when they are black and white. If the values are too close together that black and white image will look like the yarn is suddenly all the same color.
